It is with great sadness that I write about the death of legendary boxing historian and gifted raconteur Bert Randolph Sugar, from lung cancer, at the age of 75.
Known for his omnipresent fedora and unlit cigars, Bert Sugar was a central and influential figure in the sport for over 40 years. He earned a law degree and MBA from the University of Michigan in 1961, and purchased “Boxing Illustrated” magazine in 1969. He later became editor of The Ring magazine, and has written over 80 books.
The sport of boxing has lost some of its most notable figures over the past year – Joe Frazier, Angelo Dundee, and now Bert Sugar. He will be sorely missed. So let us remember one of the all-time greats as he enters that giant cigar party in the sky!
Goodbye Bert Sugar.. boxing may not be as sweet without you.
