When it comes to unusual names, Africa is generally a good place to look. The tradition tends to favor names that have some meaning to the child’s character or the circumstances of their birth. Some wonderful names have come out of this tradition.
Few, however, can hold a candle to the wonderfully named Zaire-born former soccer player Christ Bongo‘s unlikely moniker. It is perhaps the sheer headscratching quality of the combination of the names that makes it so striking (as far as fun-to-say African athletes go, it’s right up there with Have-A-Look Dube of the Zimbabwean club Njube Sundowns).
Regardless, Christ Bongo, as he was professionally known, made a fine career for himself in European soccer in the 1990’s and 2000’s, playing for 8 different clubs in Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy. He finished his career with a brief sting in the Mexican championship, before returning to Africa where he concluded his career.
If you come to this site for inspiration for naming your children, this post should provide you with plenty of ideas. Just flip a coin on whether you’ll want to forever refer to your children as Christ or Bongo.

I am so quietly proud to be first. Its very hard to be first at anything at my age! I still follow! I tend to respond in bursts.

Christ Bongo is my new favorite name. Can you imagine how many people in his life could complain to his face by saying, “Oh, Christ,” without feeling the slightest twinge of blasphemy? And, oh, in the universe of names, “Have A Look Dube” ain’t chopped liver.
Haha, that’s so true. Look for a shout-out to you in our 100th post this morning!
I definitely think you should call him Bongo. It’s an awesome name.
Haha, thanks Bongo! I agree with you!
