So first of all, I was astounded to see a post by none other than our resident funny-named funny names blogger Arto yesterday after 27 days! My best guess is that he spent a whole lunar cycle mourning the loss of Twinkies and then Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean Jacques Wamutombo and Science the Bear snapped him back into shape.
In funny names that are perhaps only funny to our fans, I found this article written by a mathematics blogger named Robert Talbert. Why is this funny? Well, for one, “-bert” may be the best funny name suffix. Don’t believe me? Ask Norbert Weiner, Egbert of Wessex, Englebert Humperdinck (who astoundingly hasn’t been profiled in this blog yet, although he was mentioned in a Benedict Cumberbatch post a while back) and Adelbert Ames.
Reason 2 why Robert Talbert is funny: well, our very own funny names blogger Rob happens to be quite tall, and growing up as a poor kid on the wrong side of the tracks, I took humble solace in the little things in life, like giving my taller (but younger) brother nicknames. Among them were Blob, and Tallbert. So Robert Talbert holds a special place in my heart.
But enough with the sentiment. Let’s move on to something cooler…
Lisa Collier Cool cites evidence from Vinet Coetzee to explain that women want skinny guys with strong immune responses. Arto is both skinny and married, so maybe there’s something to that logic.
While spending my valuable time browsing old boxing articles or something – I honestly have no idea how I found this – I stumbled upon a delightful almost-matchup in April between Joey “Twinkle Fingers” Hernandez and Cornelius “K-9” Bundrage. Also mentioned in the article: Elco Garcia, Bermane Stiverne, and Santander Silgado. The great thing about boxing is that not only do people have names like this, but the people with these kinds of names are almost always good. I think Ras-I Alujah Livingstone Bramble deserves credit. He always deserves credit.
In the saddest news this week, legendary motivational speaker Zig Ziglar (full name, Hilary Hinton “Zig” Ziglar) passed away this week at age 86. Zig’s groundbreaking advice: roll up your sleeves and work hard! Arto, Arto… are you listening? 😉
Lastly, in what unfortunately passes for encouraging news from U.S. Congress these days, there is a bill going through congress about designating January 8th as Elvis Presley Day. So far it has little support. I guess some people in congress think the bill is silly and unimportant, but that’s never stopped them before. That said, I think it has a chance – you never know what a funny named pelvis thruster can do, especially from behind the grave.
I’m very glad that Zig Ziglar will live on through his great quotes!
Me too! I’ve never actually read any of his books, but I definitely have picked up some wisdom from the guy.
Also the heckling*. Don’t forget all the heckling*. That probably helped bring him back too.
😉
* Arto, don’t worry, it comes from a place of love!
Guys-are you on first week of December hiatus? We’re going through withdrawals.
We must be. It’s been a tough week. Rob has a huge assignment at work, I had a guest come in from out of town and just had a final today, and Arto has been busy taking a film class and working.
We’ll quench your Funny Names craving shortly!
Good luck with your projects. Looking forward to the thirst quenching.
Peculiar fact: last week, despite 0 posts, we had 2600 hits, our best week other than the two weeks of the Olympics, when “funny olympic names”-type searches brought us 10,000 and 13,000 hits.
