Hello! It’s Funny Name Friday again, the time we gather around the fireplace, light a few logs, point out the most hilarious and bizarre names from this week’s newspapers, and wait for the fire department to arrive. So sit back and enjoy this week’s crop of funny names from the news.

The great Calbert Cheaney, who wasn’t a center, pictured here perhaps in the Calbert Cheaney Center, or perhaps not.
First we go to the New York Times, where fashion designer L’Wren Scott is making headlines, both with her terrific name, her rags-to-riches story of a girl making her way from Roy, Utah to the top of the New York City fashion circles, designing for Mick Jagger and the like.
Moving on to my esteemed colleague Dave’s favorite subject, boxing, where this weekend’s fight card contains so many names of humorous quality that I don’t even need to wrestle any of my usual terrible puns into this paragraph. Everyone’s favorite punchy little guy Nonito Donaire is facing up against Jorge Arce, whose name is funny if you pronounce it wrong. Personally, I think the wrong way is the only right way to say it, but that’s just me.
Also, Guillermo Rigondeaux will fight Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym. I wish the best of luck to the live match commentators.
In other news, reality Tv star Lara Bingle has won the coveted “Australia’s Most Googled” award of 2012, presumably on the backs of many funny name enthusiasts trying to verify if that is actually her real name. I’ve never seen her program(me) “Being Lara Bingle“, but the title alone has me just a tad curious. Maybe some day.*
Meanwhile, the city of Evansville, Illinois is delighting our blog this year with both good holiday cheer and great names. City mayor Lloyd Winnecke is going to be guest speaker at a charity banquet at the local NAACP chapter’s annual event, which will be held at a hall named after former NBA great and Funny Names Blog favorite Calbert Cheaney. You can’t beat that for sheer holiday related funny name awesomeness.
Happy weekend all!
*probably never
Woot! Gotta love a Calbert reference!
