Funny Names in the News, where Boring becomes Exciting!

Yes, but which one?

Yes, but which one?

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another edition (the 22nd, to be exact) of Funny Names in the News! It has been a busy week, and we have some Boring news, and some not-so-boring news, so let’s get to it.

Less-than-exciting World News

So this may only be news to me, but there’s a town named Boring, Oregon. It seems like someone would need quite a sense of humor to name a place Boring, and it takes one to live there too – the locals take it all in stride and enjoy making puns of their city’s moniker. The name came from an early resident, William H. Boring, who decided to settle in Clackamas County after the civil war. Last year, the Boring Community Planning Organization decided to “pair” with Dull, Scotland for the purpose of boosting tourism in both cities. Thanks to FNITN #22, that just may happen!

Entertainment News

Bradley Cooper decided to respond to Dr. Aida Takla O'Reilly's request to "Call me, maybe?"

Bradley Cooper decided to respond to Dr. Aida Takla O’Reilly’s request to “Call me, maybe?”

Our northeastern U.S. correspondent Mark Sackler brings us the scoop on this juicy tidbit of Hollywood gossip! At last weekend’s Golden Globes, Hollywood Foreign Press President Dr. Aida Takla O’Reilly hit on Bradley Cooper AND made a Carly Rae Jepsen reference. Gotta love when you can get two funny names for the price of one, especially when it’s someone you’ve acknowledged before.

P.S. How did that first sentence sound? I’ve decided to try my hand at the exciting world of Entertainment Tonight-style journalism.

Jobs News

In jobs news, there are a lot of recent graduates out there who are landing a lot of unpaid internships and little else, and some people – particularly Dupsy Abiola – are trying to do something about it.

“Human Interest” News

So, this isn’t really recent news, but still interesting news. In what must bring a great sigh of relief to internet denizens everywhere, funny named cognitive neuroscientists Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam took it upon themselves to analyze all of the porn on the internet. As a red blooded male who also happens to dabble as a neuroscience researcher, I have to admit I’m envious I didn’t get to be one of the guys who employed what must have been a very interesting research methodology to their work 🙂 There are perks to having funny names, that’s for sure!

Among the researchers’ more interesting findings:

“Even though you can find an instance of any kind of porn you can imagine, people search for and spend money and time on 20 sexual interests, which account for 80% of all porn. The top five are youth, gays, [sexy mothers], breasts and cheating wives.”

I can’t wait to see the search queries we generate for this post! It’ll be nice to know that we’re not the only funny names fetishists out there 🙂

Sports News

The sports world was abuzz this week with a peculiar story: Heisman Trophy runner-up Manti Te’o was involved in a long-term – but online-only – relationship with a girl named Lennay Kekua, whose death had motivated him to play football better. The story caught the nation by storm as Te’o closed in on college football’s greatest prize. It turns out that Lennay Kekua may never have existed, and is believed to have been invented by Te’o’s friend, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo and a female friend, although some believe that Te’o himself may have been in on the hoax. The verdict is still out, but we appreciate the opportunity to see some awesome Hawaiian names in the news! (Thanks to our Eastern Canadian correspondent, Amber, for the tip)

With people all excited about hockey’s return to the airwaves, we proudly inform you that Seth Jones is in line to potentially become the first black player ever to get selected #1 in the NHL draft. Why do we find this interesting… because Seth Jones is the son of retired NBA basketball player Popeye Jones!

Also, German soccer football club Bayern Munich has named Pep Gardiola as its new manager.

Obituary News

Los Angeles lost a major local celebrity last week with the passing of Huell Howser, famed host of California’s Gold, a popular public television travel show. Howser passed away at age 67 from prostate cancer. People frequently ask “How did ________ get their name?” … well, for Howser, his first name is a portmanteau of his parents’ names “Harold” and “Jewell.” A touching tribute of Howser’s life ran in the Los Angeles times last week after his death, and The Simpsons creator Matt Groening ran a brief tribute to Howser at the end of Sunday’s episode. RIP Huell Howser

That guy knows a thing or two about good comedy!

A few weeks back, we saw a huge spike that brought in over 1000 pageviews in one morning. For some reason, the “referrer tracker” that day wasn’t working so we couldn’t decipher where the views came from. Turns out that Jordan Peele – co-host (with Keegan-Michael Key) of the very funny Comedy Central program Key & Peele – tweeted a link to our Majestic Mapp & Scientific Mapp post on December 3rd!

Thanks Jordan Peele! Everyone should tune in to Key & Peele – it airs every Tuesday at 10:30 Eastern on Comedy Central, and is actually very funny.

  4. Katja says:

Hi there would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using?
I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a tough time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and
Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique.
P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!

  5. I’m not sure exactly why but this web site is loading extremely slow for me.
Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end?
I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.
