We interrupt our regular programming to bring you a treasure trove reblog of funny place names from the Orkney and Shetland Islands, c. Enjoy!
From the fascinating Strange Maps blog.
These two maps were produced by Steve Goldman. They show the place names in both groups of islands that he considers strange.
“I’ve loved place names on Orkney and Shetland since I was a kid. They are by turns surreal, beautiful, nonsensical, rude, and bizarre… There seems to be no consistency to them at all.”
Actually, if I remember correctly, the place names in Wales will give Orkney and Shetland a run for their money!
Really!!? We’ll have to look into that!
At the very least, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch deserves a mention, if you haven’t already done so in a previous post. Their postage cancellation stamp (pictured in their Wikipedia article) writes the town name in a spiral, just about the only way it would fit.
Wow.
Oh, they definitely do… Blaenau Ffestiniog is one I’ve had on my list for a while.
The Orkney and Shetland names are a gold mine! Love the train station names, too.
Thanks for linking to Strange Maps!
