Morning Funny Names fans! Can you believe it’s October already? Of 2013. How did that happen?! When I was child, 2013 was one of those years we were supposed to have flying cars and such, but I don’t see too many of those around, except in certain European countries where the driving culture is more…relaxed. But enough about things that don’t exist, let’s get to the funny names that do exist (and terrific segues that start news round-up articles).
In exciting movie news, our Exciting Movie News Correspondent Amb brings us the scoop that the highly awaited space thriller Gravity is opening this weekend and gaining terrific reviews. Directed by cerebral camera wielding genius Alfonso Cuaron, the pic features the voices of Orto Ignatiussen and Basher Savage alongside the star names of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, so there’s plenty for funny names fans to see (and hear) in the flick. Go see it!
Our Punch in the Face Correspondent Dave has some news about boxing (surprise, surprise) as well. Well named fighter Tavoris Karod Cloud lost his bout with Adonis Superman Stevenson, which is really no shame when you consider he was fighting a man named Adonis Superman Stevenson. That is extraordinary. In retro boxing news, exactly 19 years ago future world champion Chris Byrd beat Waxxem Fikes. If it’s any consolation to Waxxem, he wins the “who has the funniest name” battle by a considerable distance.
Dave also brings us the latest in petty revenge news, with the story of Quin Woodward-Pu, who avenged a young man kinda-sorta breaking up with her by text message by forwarding all the “sexts” he had sent her, to his employer. You see, he had been sending some “late night text messages”, if you know what I mean, from his work phone. Still, Quin Woodward-Pu is one hell of a name.
Our Just Generally Always Excited Correspondent Amb is also excited about a new TV show (I know, get out of town!). It’s called Garfunkel and Oates, which is funny, and stars Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci. It’ll be a good time, I’m sure. Check with Amb if you want to hear all about it!
Dave also dug up this article on the new health care law, which includes a comment by Harvard political scientist Theda Skocpol. We salute his/her name as fully Ivy League worthy.
That’s all we’ve got for you this week, hope you got your funny names Friday dose from our roundup!
When you were a kid/ You mean you’re not still one? I remember when we had nightmarish futuristic dreams of 1984. 2000 was so far away we would never get there. Oh damn. We got there. 😦
When do people stop being kids? I’ve always wondered that myself.
I agree, kidhood has vague borders. I tried to dodge that by saying “child” which seems like it has a narrower definition but still got called out on it!
Whenever I think of flying cars, I think of The Fifth Element. You need a Multipass. Leeloo Dallas Mool-tee-pass.
And that was set in like 2500 so they really hedged their bets with that one.
I’ll only be 514 at that point. Anything is possible!
And Milla will only be 524. So you’re all set 😉
The Friday posts are always amazing. I never understood how you guys can do it: find so many funny names, and then roll them all out at once, resisting the urge to horde them away and parcel them out slowly later in stingy single-name posts.
I know Garfunkle and Oates from their song 29/31 (language NSFW).
[Ouch. Edit. I just took out the embed because language was indeed NSFW.]
It’s the age-old pig v. squirrel debate. To pig it all out at once or to squirrel it away for months? We do both, because we don’t like to pick sides here (except the side of funny names).
half the fun is how you name your correspondents, Arto. 🙂
Looking back a few months, the prancercise lady made the Mpls paper Variety section this last week. Article not nearly as funny as the one you pulled–made her look more like a business woman and less like a goofball. Wonder how far she’ll get with this. Regardless, I’ll always remember that I heard it here first.
Ooh, we do like a good update on an old fave. Good to see she’s still got some mileage left in that.
PS. send me some of that bourbon chocolate cake 😉
