Keeping this week’s theme going, it’s time to pull out your geek glasses, polish them up, and put them on. Don’t worry, I’ll wait.
*Fannie cues up the Big Bang Theory theme song.*
Mr. Abhay Bhushan was born in Allahabad, India, on November 23, 1944.
For those of you unfamiliar with Mr. Abhay Bhushan, he is one of the early pioneers of the internet. Those of you in the know, know in 1971 he wrote “RFC 114” while attending MIT. For any one else Planning on reading further, that would be “File Transfer Protocol” (FTP).
It’s only 17 pages if you want to read it. 😉
He also pioneered the earliest versions of e-mail for the ARPANet and, subsequently, the Internet. And he didn’t stop there—he was a big time contributor to the development of the Internet: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) architecture.
Now that’s what I call pulling a rabbit out of your hat.
He didn’t waste his time at MIT, either. He graduated with a masters in Electrical Engineering and a degree in Management from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Before MIT, he graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur receiving a Bachelor’s of Technology in Electrical Engineering.
Phew. *Fannie mops her brow.*
But wait there’s more. If that wasn’t enough, he runs marathons. And is an Ironman triathlete. Way to go Mr. Bhushan. What ever you do, don’t go back and look at his birthday.
Me, I’ve got the “ath” part down, but I’m still working on the “-lete”.
Where is he today? He’s the chairman of Asquare, Inc., in San Francisco, California. Since there are no common domain photos available, here is his Linked In profile page.
So the next time you upload, download, or send an e-mail, be sure to thank Abhay Bhushan. Write on . . . .
Feel free to remove your geek glasses.

“. . . and Arto takes the computer science ball . . . and he’s . . . he’s . . . Oh, m’Gosh! Suprise handoff to Fannie! Unbelievable, BoFN fans! Fannie’s got it! And she’s running with it! Yes! And she’s driving computer science down the field! . . . MIT! RFC! FTP! HAT! Uh, Bob what is that HAT acronym, anyway?”
“Well, Bill, it looks like that HAT is not an acronym for anything. It looks like Fannie’s working with some kind of metaphor, there.”
“Well, either way, what a play! And . . . But . . . Wow! She’s still running with it! Look at that! She’ still going! Yes! Nothing’s going to stop her . . . and it’s . . . it’s . . . TOUCHDOWN!!!! Oh, M’Gosh! I’ve never seen anything like that! And the crowd’s going wild!!!”
“That was an incredible run, Bill, and I’d say an incredible play all around.”
“Fabulous, fabulous playing here today! Do you think they worked that out in advance, Bob, or just saw the opportunity and jumped on it.”
“It’s hard to say, Bill. Ordinarily I’d guess with a complex handoff like that I’d say it was coordinated and worked out beforehand, because you got, uh, such close integration of the, uh, subject matter, but the way that played out it looked so spontaneous, and, uh, that’s not something you can fake, so I’d have to say that this was a, uh, highly fortunate confluence of circumstances there, adding up to one magical moment in BoFN sports.”
“This is definitely one for the history books, Bob! And stay tuned, BoFN fans, for more action when we get back!”
I heart you. WordPress Happiness Engineers, where’s my comment “Like” button?!?!
Does WordPress actually have Happiness Engineers?
Dave, Dave, Dave, have you not yet met any of the happiness engineers? You are totally missing out.
Yours in geekitude, Fannie
P.S. The Happiness Engineers like hugs too: http://en.support.wordpress.com/hugs/ 😀
to borrow a phrase from amb, bahahahahahahahahahahaha! Funny times a gazlllion–and you obviously have a handle on sportscaster dialogue.
“Well, Bill, it looks like that HAT is not an acronym for anything. It looks like Fannie’s working with some kind of metaphor, there.” – Well played, sir. Haha, this comment was at least as good as the article above. Yeah, go team!
Thanks, dyudes! But that really was amazing synchronicity with the back to back computer science posts!
This is why I can never decide what I enjoy more, the posts or the comments. Perhaps we should open a comments hall of fame. I vote Wdydfae’s comment to be our first inductee. 🙂
P.S. We definitely have some sort of science confluence working here. Well played (or is that announced) Wdydfae!
I’m open to the idea. What are everyone’s thoughts?
Thanks, Fannie! It was a fun post and that’s what inspired me.
Out of context the comment effort wouldn’t make too much sense so I’d say save the Hall of Fame for stand alone comment gems.
Haha, awesome!
Fannie, I heart you too. This was hysterical. I loved your acronyms !!!
Thanks Amb. The feeling is mutual.
I couldn’t help the acronyms, they just seemed to spill onto the page. But paginating them was much more difficult than I thought it would be. It was not a wysiwyg! 😉
Nicely played 😉
Ah, shucks. 😀
Awesome, Fannie/Tracy. Woo hoo on the (half) marathon and I am indeed going to thank Mr. Abhay Bhushan today. Looks like the board’s going to need a Funny Names in Science category. Love the bolded first letter thing above. Made my brain cells do push-ups! 😉
Thanks, Liz! It was fun to write.
Hope you didn’t have to do too many push-ups, but they would make room for snacks later. 🙂
Great post, and I think our first use of strategically-placed acronyms. We’re all blazing new territory here!
… but I will never remove my geek glasses!
I would not ask you too!
Reblogged this on Fannie Cranium's and commented:
If you’ve ever sent an e-mail or uploaded something to the internet, you’ll want to thank Abhay Bhushan. This month’s contribution to the Blog of Funny Names.
P.S. When did the “Related” posts start showing up? Did anyone notice?
That was fabulous, Fannie! I feel completely geeked out this am, and I do love Big Bang Theory, whose theme song is now lodged in my head, but that’s ok! Love the comments, all!
Thanks L! Somehow I think the comments are the best part of blogging.
Glad you’re okay with the ear worm.
